EDITORIAL: Ethics is action and results
Cui Wantian, Board member, entrepreneur, Professor of
economics in China and host of the Globethics.net Board of Foundation meeting
in Beijing, China from 30 October to 1 November 2015 began the third session of
the meeting with the following reflection.
"In China we talk about the importance of good results.
Confucius was a good teacher, teaching us about balance. Over the course of
Chinese history different religious traditions have been destroyed, for example
Buddhism, which had a huge influence and is becoming important once again.
Christianity is also growing in China. In this context I want to see the
development and practice of values-driven leadership as well.
In my institute, the Kingdom Business College, the ethos is
one of respect, generosity and duty. We are informed by Confucian and by
Christian teachings. Jesus did not love because he was loved, he loved
regardless and gave himself, his life, out of love.
The Chinese Christian entrepreneurs that I work with
practice philanthropy, they demonstrate their love and their duty in a
practical way. Ethics is action and results. As a teacher and a friend I try to
give first and to show the way. The entrepreneurs themselves open the way. God
gave and the result is a responsibility to give back. The model is to surpass
Confucianism, which involves balance, meaning that when good is done then do
good in return, if something bad then something bad in return. Jesus taught us
to love our neighbour, our enemies. This is revolutionary.
Love is like the sun, we gather energy from it, we take it
and we use it even when it has gone, even during the night. We love our
enemies, strangers, everyone. It is difficult for human beings to do this but
we must try."

Information Technology for Mission in the 21st Century
Against the background of shifts in global Christianity,
Globethics.net Programme Director Stephen Brown explores the role of new information and communication
technology for Christian mission in the 21st century, in this chapter
published as a contribution to a new book, Reflecting and Equipping for
Christian Mission, edited by Stephen Bevans, Teresa Chai, Knud Jorgensen and
Nelson Jennings, and published by Regnum, Oxford (ISBN: 1-9083-5587-4). Using
the example of the Global Digital Library on Theology and Ecumenism,
GlobeTheoLib, Stephen Brown explores issues such as the role of ICTs in
promoting mutuality, partnership and interdependence in global education, as
well as the challenges of cultural centrism and the ownership of knowledge
production.

RESEARCH/PROJECTS
Global Ethics Forum – Looking back and ahead: 23-25 June
2016!)
Did you miss this year’s Global Ethics Forum (GEF)? Or were
you there, but would like to read up on the proceedings? Good news! We have
just published the Global Ethics Forum 2015 Report. The Global Ethics Forum is
Globethics.net’s flagship, annual ethics conference and discussed this year the
topic of “Responsible Leadership in Action: The Value of Values”. What makes the GEF special is its
cross-sectoral nature with participation from academia, business, civil
society, governmental and religious organisations, its truly global nature and
its orientation towards action.
The GEF 2015 conference featured multidimensional
discussions on the topic of responsible leadership in the different sectors and
regions. It saw a lot of personal engagement and networking, and lastly, it led
to the discussion and creation of practical initiatives to boost responsible
leadership in various sectors and for various target groups. The GEF is a co-creation
of all the people involved and we consider ourselves very lucky to be able to
count on the motivation, knowledge and contributions of so many experts from
different sectors all around the world - thank you for that!
We are looking forward to keeping and continuing the
momentum in 2016. The GEF 2016 has entered the planning phase now. Save already
the dates: 23-25 June 2016 in Geneva. Have a look at what happened on social
media during the Global Ethics Forum 2015, on Storify: Day 1 and Day 2
Ethics in Higher Education: a future priority of Globethics
net
The International Council for Distant Education ICDE
(representing over 100 open universities worldwide and over 10 million
students) organised its bi-annual conference in South Africa on 15-17 October
2015, hosted by the University of South Africa Unisa, organised by the
Globethics.net Southern Africa Director Prof. Divya Singh from Unisa. Christoph
Stückelberger gave a keynote speech at the Presidents’ Summit (within the ICDE
conference, which brought together over 70 Presidents and Vice-Chancellors of
open universities from around the world). His presentation “Ethics in Higher
Education” was well received as a topic to be further taken up with ICDE and
other institutions such as the Commonwealth of Learning (CoL) in the
Commonwealth countries willing to cooperate with Globethics.net.
Globethics.net in its future strategy 2016-2020 will
emphasise this topic of ethics in higher education. Globethics.net will as a
first step develop 12 modules on ethics in higher education for staff,
administrators and boards of higher education institutions as a joint project
with Unisa. For more information read

Globethics.net Focus No. 29

How to be a responsible leader in the context of the world
crises today?
This was the guiding question of the 6th edition of the Global Ethics
Forum (GEF), that took place in Geneva, Switzerland, from 25-27 June
2015. The GEF 2015, a cross-sectoral and multinational gathering, provided an
ideal multidimensional platform of discussion for this topic, witnessing lots
of cross-fertilization. Next to reflecting the state and need for responsible
leadership in the different sectors and regions, the Forum emphasised the
exploration of solutions for both general and issue- or sector-specific
challenges. These include projects for codes of ethics implementation, for
improved access to jobs, enhanced responsible investment, values-driven
education, responsible resource management and many more. This report presents
a summary of the entire conference including recommendations and projects for
action.

Sustainability Ethics: Ecology, Economy & Ethics (2015)
Sanjoy Mukherjee / Christoph Stückelberger (eds.)
Globethics.net Global No.10
ISBN 978-2-88931-069-2
"Sustainable Development" is the goal 2015-2030 of
the global community of states, adopted by the United Nations. This book shows
how ecology, economy and ethics are all needed to reach these goals.
Understanding a concept like ‘sustainability' requires an understanding not only
of what we are seeking to ‘sustain', but also how man's activities and needs
are implicated in and can threaten the future of these biological systems. The
articles in this book come from one of the key countries of the world, India,
whose population represents almost 20% of the world's population. Questions
surrounding economic development and environmental sustainability are
fundamental to understanding the country's future, and how it will tackle
difficult issues, like the eradication of poverty.

Évangélisation et pratique holistique de conversion en
Afrique (2015)
Alexis Lékpéa Dea
Globethics.net Ethics These No. 14
ISBN 978-2-88931-057-9
